The Manchester United wonderkid has turned 16, with his next move now becoming one of the biggest stories in European youth football.
JJ Gabriel has turned 16 with his future at Manchester United increasingly uncertain, as some of Europe’s biggest clubs continue to circle the highly-rated forward. Gabriel has formally asked to leave United, and reports now claim he is set to pursue a Cypriot passport that could allow him to move to an EU club. A January departure is reportedly being planned, although no agreement with a new club has been reached.
Real Madrid and Barcelona lead the chase
Real Madrid and Barcelona are currently reported to be the most concrete options, with both clubs prepared to put forward attractive packages involving salary, bonuses and a signing-on payment. Bayern Munich have also held further talks, while Paris Saint-Germain remain interested. Earlier reports had already established that all four clubs were monitoring Gabriel after he requested the cancellation of his Manchester United registration.
The passport issue could be decisive. Gabriel was born in England and has Irish and Cypriot family connections, and obtaining Cypriot citizenship would potentially allow him to move to an EU club once the relevant FIFA requirements are satisfied. That would be significant because post-Brexit rules make international transfers involving British players under 18 considerably more complicated.
Why Europe’s biggest clubs want Gabriel
Gabriel’s reputation has been built on remarkable numbers at youth level. In 2025/26, Manchester United’s academy recognised him as the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year after he scored 23 league goals, while the club described him as its leading scorer during the campaign. He also became the youngest United player to score a hat-trick in the UEFA Youth League when he struck three times against Sabah in September.
His current campaign has continued in similar fashion. UEFA records three goals from his only Youth League appearance so far, while domestic youth competitions have added two more goals and two assists. For Manchester United, the challenge is now to convince one of their most promising academy players to stay. For Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern and PSG, the opportunity is to secure a teenager who has already attracted serious attention before making his senior breakthrough.
