The club wants its players focused on football as the appeal against the Premier League verdict begins.
Manchester City are reportedly keen for Enzo Maresca to reassure his players as the club deals with the fallout from the Premier League’s financial ruling. A report circulating on Tuesday claims the club’s ownership and senior leadership have asked the manager to speak to the squad and ensure the ongoing controversy does not disrupt their focus. City have strongly rejected the findings and insist they remain innocent of the accusations.
City determined to keep football at the centre
The timing is significant. An independent commission found Manchester City guilty of serious breaches of Premier League financial rules covering nine seasons from 2009/10 to 2017/18, including findings that the club used sham commercial agreements to artificially inflate revenue and reduce costs by more than £900 million. The club has since lodged a comprehensive appeal, arguing that the commission’s opinion contains material errors of law, principle and fact.
Despite the controversy, Maresca’s team have made an excellent start to the campaign. City remain unbeaten and had won their opening five Premier League matches before the international break, leaving the new manager with strong momentum on the pitch. Their next major test will come against Liverpool at Anfield on October 11, when attention is expected to be split between the football and the intense scrutiny surrounding the club.
Maresca faces a different kind of challenge
The Italian manager has already made clear that his priority is building a new team after taking over from Pep Guardiola. Now he must also keep his squad insulated from an off-field dispute that could take months to resolve. City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has publicly insisted that “nothing has changed” and that the club’s confidence in proving its innocence remains as strong as ever.
The appeal is now officially underway, with the Premier League confirming that the case has been referred to an independent Appeal Board. No sporting sanction has yet been imposed, and the eventual consequences will depend on the outcome of the legal process. For Maresca and his players, the immediate task is simpler: keep winning while the club fights its battle away from the pitch.
