The Liverpool recruitment chief has stepped down after two years at Anfield, with a move to Saudi Arabia expected to follow
Richard Hughes has officially left his role as Liverpool sporting director, bringing an end to his two-year spell at Anfield. Liverpool confirmed on Saturday that Hughes had informed the club's ownership of his desire to seek a “fresh challenge”, while his next move is expected to be with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. Reuters reports that the 47-year-old's departure comes immediately after the summer transfer window.

Hughes leaves after major Liverpool rebuild
Hughes joined Liverpool from Bournemouth in June 2024, taking charge of football operations and recruitment during the transition following Jürgen Klopp's departure. One of his biggest decisions was the appointment of Arne Slot, who guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season. Hughes also oversaw major recruitment campaigns that brought Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike to Anfield.
His tenure also coincided with substantial spending. Liverpool invested heavily in the squad, although the club's 2025/26 campaign raised questions over squad balance and some recruitment decisions. Slot was eventually dismissed after Liverpool's title defence fell short of expectations, adding further scrutiny to Hughes' work in the sporting department.
Al-Hilal move expected after Anfield exit
Hughes had been linked with Al-Hilal for several months before Liverpool confirmed his departure. The Saudi club has been reported as his likely destination, where he is expected to take up a senior sporting role and work alongside former Bournemouth colleague Simon Francis. Liverpool are now faced with the task of finding a replacement for a sporting director who oversaw a major period of change at the club.
Liverpool said Hughes leaves with the best wishes of everyone at the club. Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon praised his contribution during a period of significant change, while Hughes described his time at Anfield as a source of great pride. His next chapter is now expected to begin in Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal.
