Sergio Busquets has taken his first official step into coaching after returning to Barcelona as an assistant coach with Barça Atlètic, the club's reserve side. The former Spain international will work alongside head coach Juliano Belletti while completing the process required to obtain his coaching licence. The move marks Busquets' first coaching role after ending his playing career with Inter Miami in December 2025.

Busquets returns to a familiar environment
The 38-year-old spent 15 seasons with Barcelona's first team, making 722 appearances and winning nine La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies during his extraordinary career. He later moved to Inter Miami in 2023, where he played alongside former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba before retiring at the end of the 2025 season. Inter Miami confirmed that Busquets made 56 appearances across all competitions in his final full campaign, providing 13 assists.
His return also puts him alongside Belletti, who remains in charge of Barça Atlètic for the 2026/27 season. Barcelona confirmed in June that the former Brazil international had renewed his contract after guiding the reserve side during the previous campaign. The club sees Barça Atlètic as an important development stage for players moving towards professional football.
A new chapter for one of Barcelona's greatest midfielders
Busquets' move into coaching comes after a playing career built around positional intelligence, control and tactical understanding. His experience should provide valuable guidance to a young Barça Atlètic squad, while the role gives him an opportunity to learn the demands of coaching from inside the club where he developed into one of football's greatest defensive midfielders.
Barcelona have not indicated that Busquets is being prepared for a specific future role with the first team. For now, his focus is on working with Belletti and completing his coaching education. His appointment nevertheless represents a significant return for a player whose influence at Camp Nou extended far beyond his statistics.
