Portugal’s head coach has read Ronaldo’s lengthy explanation but refuses to prolong the public dispute
Jorge Jesus has responded to Cristiano Ronaldo’s latest statement, but the Portugal head coach has made clear that he does not intend to continue the public back-and-forth between the pair. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Jesus confirmed that he had read Ronaldo’s account of the dispute before heading to the Portuguese Football Federation headquarters.
Jesus Keeps Focus on Portugal
“I read the statement and now, like I do every day, I'm going to the Federation headquarters to work, to think about the Portuguese national team,” Jesus said. He then added: “I have nothing more to say.” His brief response came one day after Ronaldo published a detailed statement explaining why he left Portugal’s training camp during the recent international window.
Ronaldo’s statement offered his version of the events surrounding his departure, including his account of discussions with Jesus and what he believed had been agreed regarding his treatment within the national team. The 41-year-old forward had previously left camp after not being brought on against Norway despite warming up, before later explaining publicly why he had decided to leave.
Ronaldo’s Portugal Future Remains Open
The latest development is particularly significant because Jesus had previously suggested that the situation could still be resolved. After Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on October 4, he said Ronaldo could return to the national team whenever he wanted and described the dispute as a misunderstanding that could be resolved.
For now, however, Jesus appears determined to move the focus away from the controversy and back towards his work with Portugal. His refusal to respond directly to Ronaldo’s latest accusations leaves the dispute without a fresh public confrontation, while the possibility of the captain returning to the squad remains open.
