Atletico Madrid Stand Firm on Alvarez
Atlético's position remains one of the biggest obstacles to the proposed move. The Madrid club have repeatedly stated that they do not want to sell Alvarez, particularly to Barcelona, after relations between the two clubs deteriorated during the transfer saga. Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has publicly criticised Barcelona's approach and said the club will not accept even substantially higher offers for the striker. Barcelona have previously had a €100 million bid rejected, while Atlético also turned down a €150 million proposal from Real Madrid.
The situation is complicated further by Alvarez's own preference. Sky Sports has reported that Barcelona remains his preferred destination, while Atlético are understood to be more open to the possibility of selling him to Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain if he insists on leaving. Arsenal remain interested and have maintained communication with Atlético, while PSG have also been linked with the Argentina international. For now, however, there is no indication that Atlético have changed their position or that a transfer is close to being completed.
Why Alvarez Remains So Important to Atletico
Atlético's determination to keep Alvarez is understandable given his importance since arriving from Manchester City in 2024. The Argentina international scored 20 goals and provided nine assists in 49 appearances for Atlético during the 2025-26 season, excluding the Club World Cup. Since his debut for the club, he has scored 49 goals and recorded 17 assists, making him one of the most productive players in Diego Simeone's squad.
Alvarez, born on January 31, 2000, is a versatile forward who can operate as a centre-forward or contribute from deeper attacking positions. Atlético's public stance is that he remains central to their plans, but his return to Madrid now creates a decisive moment in the saga. The coming days should reveal whether Alvarez pushes again for his preferred Barcelona move or attempts to repair his relationship with Atlético and continue in Madrid for another season.
