The Italian left-back has given the green light to the move, with only a few final steps needed before the transfer can be completed
Aston Villa have agreed a €20 million deal with Atlético Madrid for Italian left-back Matteo Ruggeri, with the player also approving the move to the Premier League. The agreement, worth around £17.1m, is now at an advanced stage, although contract terms still need to be finalised before the transfer can be completed. Recent reports confirm that the clubs have broadly agreed the fee and Ruggeri is progressing with personal terms.
Ruggeri gives green light to Villa move
Ruggeri, 24, joined Atlético from Atalanta last summer and quickly became part of Diego Simeone's squad. The versatile left-back made 47 appearances in all competitions during the 2025/26 season, recording seven assists, according to available season data. In La Liga, he played 26 matches, starting 20, and provided three assists.
Emery adds another option at left-back
The move comes as Aston Villa look to strengthen their options on the left side of defence. Ruggeri's ability to operate as both a full-back and wing-back fits the profile sought by Unai Emery, while his age gives Villa the opportunity to secure a player with significant room for development. Reports indicate that the Italian's contract terms are now the remaining major step before the transfer can be finalised.
Atlético are also reshaping their defensive options after bringing in Alejandro Grimaldo, making Ruggeri's departure increasingly likely. With the player already giving his approval and the clubs aligned on a €20m package, Aston Villa are now closing in on their new Italian left-back.
