The Portugal captain is reportedly unwilling to return to the national team while Jorge Jesus remains in charge.
Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly made his position clear following the dramatic fallout with Portugal manager Jorge Jesus. According to CNN Portugal journalist Rui Santos, the 41-year-old does not intend to return to the national team while Jesus remains in charge. The report comes just days after Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp following a dispute over his involvement in the Nations League fixtures.
Ronaldo’s future now tied to Jesus
The tension began when Ronaldo was left on the bench for the entire 2–1 win over Norway, despite warming up during the match. Jesus had explained that he intended to introduce the forward for around 30 minutes, but ultimately decided against making the change. Ronaldo was then informed that he would not start against Denmark and subsequently left the squad.
Ronaldo later posted that he would reveal the reasons for his departure “in due course”, while Jesus has repeatedly insisted that there is no permanent breakdown between them. The coach has even said Ronaldo can return whenever he wants, while Portuguese federation president Pedro Proença has described the situation as a misunderstanding.
Portugal faces a major decision
The reported stance leaves Portugal with an awkward situation. Ronaldo remains the country's most-capped player and leading international scorer, with 234 appearances and 146 goals. However, the veteran forward has also indicated that 2026 would probably be his final year in football, meaning the dispute could have a direct impact on the final chapter of his international career.
Portugal have already secured their place in the Nations League quarter-finals after winning their opening four matches under Jesus, including victories over Norway and Denmark without Ronaldo. The next international window comes in November, when Portugal are scheduled to face Denmark and Wales. Whether Ronaldo is involved may now depend on whether the current standoff with Jesus can be resolved.
