Ipswich Town have completed the signing of Dutch goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen from Union Saint-Gilloise in a deal worth £8.5 million, with a further £2.5 million in potential add-ons. The 26-year-old has signed a long-term contract after impressing in Belgium and arrives as one of the tallest professional footballers in the world at 6ft 9in (2.06m). The move was officially confirmed by the Premier League club.

Why Ipswich targeted Scherpen
Scherpen established himself as one of the standout goalkeepers in the Belgian Pro League during the 2025/26 campaign. Across all competitions, he made 40 appearances and kept 19 clean sheets, playing a key role in Union Saint-Gilloise's defensive record. While goalkeepers do not register goals or assists, his commanding aerial presence and shot-stopping ability made him one of the league's most consistent performers.
The former Ajax, Brighton & Hove Albion and Sturm Graz goalkeeper is expected to compete immediately for the No. 1 spot as Ipswich strengthen their squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
