Atlanta United have opened initial talks with Darwin Núñez over a potential move to Major League Soccer as the club looks to land a marquee striker this summer. According to reports, Núñez is expected to leave Al Hilal after being frozen out of Saudi Pro League matches during the second half of last season, with both parties discussing the possibility of a mutual contract termination. However, the Uruguay international remains under contract with the Saudi club for now. Atlanta are also considering Breel Embolo, who is valued at around €15 million, as an alternative option.

Núñez weighs up his next move
Atlanta see Núñez as their priority target, although negotiations are still at an early stage. The 27-year-old is looking for a fresh start after losing his place in Al Hilal's Saudi Pro League squad following the arrival of Karim Benzema, despite making a strong start to life in Saudi Arabia. Discussions over a mutual termination are ongoing, which could pave the way for a move to the United States.
Before falling out of favour, Núñez produced respectable numbers during the 2025/26 season, scoring 9 goals and providing 5 assists in 24 appearances across all competitions for Al Hilal. His performances helped the club win the Saudi Pro League title, but limited playing time in the second half of the campaign ultimately accelerated plans for his departure.
Embolo remains on Atlanta's shortlist
While Núñez is the preferred option, Atlanta United continue to evaluate other possibilities in case negotiations become complicated. AS Monaco forward Breel Embolo remains firmly on the club's shortlist, with the Switzerland international valued at approximately €15m.
